ALTEN TECH WEEK - Timothy Oluwole - ALTEN Belgium

ALTEN TECH WEEK – Timothy Oluwole

This past June 3rd to 7th, ALTEN hosted its first International Tech Week, featuring a series of distinctive and insightful webinars on the given theme: Understanding the Impact of AI & ML on Our Industries and Daily Life.

One standout session was Enhancing Communications with AI, delivered by Timothy Oluwole. He is a Full Stack Software Engineer Consultant at ALTEN Luxembourg, with a background in Product Design, Product Development and Product Management, and with close to a decade of Software Engineering experience under his belt. We will now dig deeper into the points raised throughout his talk, and more specifically just how he makes use of AI tools in his daily life.

In your own words, describe Artificial Intelligence and give instances of its revolution to enhance efficient communication.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think, understand, and respond like humans. These intelligent systems can perform tasks such as problem-solving, and understanding natural language, among others.

Since 2020, GPT-3 has demonstrated the ability to generate coherent and contextually relevant text, perform language translation, generate context, and even write code, showcasing the power of deep learning. Existing tools and technologies (such as Siri or Google Assistance for instance) have started integrating these AI modules that can now understand and respond to complex queries.

What are the human values to consider when using AI?

When using AI, I will insist on considering these 3 crucial points:

  1. Data Privacy
  1. Data Security
  1. Ethical Communication

Whether we are dealing with AI or other technological realms, data privacy and security should always be respected. This means ensuring that sensitive personal data and company information are treated with the utmost confidentiality and are not openly shared on AI platforms. When relying on AI to generate content, we must also consider the ethical aspects of communication. Although AI aids us in providing us with ideas and generating content, the way we communicate should not lose its human nature but should remain relatable and empathetic.

Can you describe your experience using Artificial Intelligence?

I have applied AI in different aspects of my professional and personal life. AI has especially played a key role when it comes to smoothening my human interactions and working with diverse clients from my country of residence, Luxembourg.

As you may know, there are over 170 different nationalities currently residing and coexisting in Luxembourg. That is to say that foreigners account for 70.8% of the city’s population. An average of 4 languages is spoken daily, switching from French to English, and from Luxembourgish to German.

In my daily life, I use AI-powered “smart headphones” to aid me in the translation of these various languages. I wear them in different instances, during work meetings, as well as in social gatherings where there are people speaking languages foreign to me. These AI powered ear pods tear down linguistic barriers I used to encounter, allowing me to better adapt to the environments I find myself in and adding value to my verbal exchanges. I also rely on AI to analyse complex technical problems in my work, such as in the development of Software Systems, and GenAI to solve code algorithms.

What is the vision for the future of AI?

The vision for the future of AI entails a wide range of technological advancements and ethical considerations. Here are some of the key aspects:

  1. Ever-evolving AI: The next evolution we can expect in the realm of AI is the achievement of AGI, or artificial general intelligence. This theoretical form of intelligence would be able to perform any intellectual task that a human can, by means of software systems equipped with advanced reasoning, problem-solving, and self-teaching capabilities.
  1. Specialised AI: An AI specialised in a particular field to assist consultants in their work and that could potentially even pose as a consultant in that field. With continued refinement of specialised AI systems for specific tasks, this could lead to more efficient, accurate, and powerful applications in the fields of healthcare, finance, transportation, and customer service.
  1. Human-AI & AI-AI Collaboration: The coming together of humans and technology, where AI would serve as a powerful tool to improve human capabilities, rather than replace them altogether. AI could also eventually collaborate with other AI to solve problems.
  1. Internet of Things (IoT): The expansion of the IoT ecosystem, where AI-powered devices communicate and collaborate to provide enhanced convenience and efficiency in homes and businesses.
  1. Personal Assistants: More advanced and intuitive AI personal assistants that understand, execute tasks and even anticipate user needs, making everyday tasks easier and more efficient.
